  	By a papal bull, he was appointed Commendator of the Abbey of Paisly by Pope Julius III on the resignation of his uncle John Hamilton, a natural son of the 1st Earl of Arran. The bull calls him fourteen years of age, but as he is found granting a charter on 6 August 1564 with consent of his father as tutor, it is clear he must have been under age at that time, so that he cannot have been born earlier than 1543.
