521 | KINFAUNS Fergus Christopher Commane (The Much Honoured Lord Kinfauns, 26th baron) landowner of Newhall House and Estate, custodian of Killone Abbey and the Holy Well of St John the Baptist in County Clare, keeper of the hereditary office of admiralty of the Tay — an ancient honour granted to his predecessor. In 2024, he succeeded to the dignity of Lord Kinfauns, a baronial lordship granted by King James III of Scots in 1487 and reaffirmed in 1608 by King James I of Ireland. The title carries a storied history, later merging with the prestigious Earldom of Moray, one of the original seven earldoms of Scotland, with traditions tracing an earlier creation to Sir Thomas Charteris, a knight who fought alongside Wallace and Bruce. In 2025, the family’s Gaelic lineage was formally recognised when Clan Ó Comáin was entered onto the Clans of Ireland Register under the patronage of the President of Ireland. Lord Kinfauns was installed as Taoiseach, Chief of Ó Comáin, affirming the family’s descent from the rí kings of the Déisi Munster and the historic Chiefdom of Tulach Commáin. His ancestors include Suibne mac Commán, king of the Déisi, and Ferchess mac Commán, a warrior-seer of the High Kings’ court whose deeds are preserved in early Irish annals. Born in 1953 at Newhall, County Clare, he was the youngest of eleven children, raised on his parents’ farm overlooking the great house that would later become his family home. Educated locally at St Flannan’s College, Ennis, he grew up deeply immersed in the traditions and history of Gaelic Ireland. In early adulthood, he moved to London, where he built a successful career in business while keeping a lifelong vision of restoring Newhall Estate to its former prominence. In 1984, he married Maria, Lady Kinfauns, with whom he has three children. Together, they later acquired Newhall House and its demesne, embarking on one of Ireland’s most significant private restoration projects. A devout Catholic, His Lordship views his role as custodian of Newhall as a spiritual calling — restoring the house, sacred sites, and surrounding lands in honour of faith, heritage, and continuity. He continues to champion the preservation of Ireland’s built and natural heritage, ensuring the estate’s history remains vibrant for future generations. He resides at Newhall with his family, balancing his duties as landowner and Chief of Clan Ó Comáin with his quiet stewardship of a lineage and legacy stretching back over a millennium. | Commane, Fergus Christopher 26th Lord Kinfauns (P7070)
